Toscanini leaves the Teatro Regio in Turin and upon the advice of Arrigo Boito and Giulio Gatti-Casazza, the theater’s administrative director, he takes over the directorship of Milan’s Teatro alla Scala. On December 26, 1898, he debuts at La Scala with Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg . At La Scala he conducts Verdi’s Il trovatore , an opera that at the time was considered to have been surpassed, thus laying the foundations for the “Verdi renaissance.” 1906-1908 Toscanini’s father Claudio and his son Giorgio die. His daughter Wanda is born. He leaves the directorship of La Scala and takes over that of the Metropolitan Opera Company in NewYork. 1900 His daughter Wally is born. 1901 On January 27 Giuseppe Verdi dies. On February 1 Toscanini conducts the commemorative concert at La Scala, and on February 26 he conducts “Va’, pensiero” of the moving of the bodies of Verdi and Giuseppina Strepponi from the Cimitero Monumentale to the Casa di Riposo per Musicisti.
